Acupuncture is Better than Morphine for Pain

According to a recent study from the American Journal of Emergency Medicine, researchers found that acupuncture is better than morphine for relieving pain.  The study had 300 participants, half of which were treated with acupuncture and the other half were given morphine to treat their pain.

92% of the patients treated with acupuncture found that their pain was reduced compared with 78% of the patients treated with morphine.  The patients who received acupuncture had the pain resolved in an average of 16 minutes compared with 28 minutes in the morphine group.

As far as side effects were concerned, 57% of the patients who were given morphine reported minor side effects to the medication.  Only 3% of the patients who received acupuncture complained of minor side effects.

The researchers concluded that acupuncture works faster, helps more people to get out of pain, and has much less side effects than the powerful drug morphine.  They state that acupuncture could be a great treatment for patients who are in pain who show up to the emergency room.

The Effects of Acupuncture Last for Months

In a separate study of 17,922 subjects composed of 29 separate trials, it was discovered that 90% of the benefit of acupuncture lasts for a year.  Even when contrasted with “sham” acupuncture points, the effects of “real” acupuncture persist for about a year.

We take issue with the term “sham” acupuncture points.  Almost every single time a “sham” point is used, it is an acupuncture point taken from a different system.  In the picture, the red dot is the famous point He Gu that is used in the majority of acupuncture studies.  Surrounding the red dot are many black dots which are points that come from a separate lineage called Tung’s Acupuncture which developed at the same time as what is known as orthodox acupuncture.

You can see that there are many points that are quite near the orthodox point and they have similar effects to the orthodox point He Gu.  The authors of the studies that use “sham” points are not aware of other systems of acupuncture in our opinion.

As you have read above, acupuncture is more of the strongest, most effective treatments for reducing pain.  84% of our patients achieve a 76% reduction in pain or other symptoms on the very first visit.  So, if you’re having neck pain, back pain, sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome, shoulder pain, tennis elbow, knee pain, ankle pain, or foot pain call our office at (314) 569-0057 or you can e-mail the office at eric_waltemate@stlouisacupuncture.net.
