For some time now, we have been treating a young lady who suffers from Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and Fibromyalgia. Ehlers Danlos Syndrome causes her to dislocate in her hips, knees, shoulders and even rib cage, leaving her in a great deal of pain in her bones and joints. The Fibromyalgia causes significant muscle and nerve pain, which is at times debilitating.  She came to our office seeking pain relief.

After a recent weekend of activity around the yard, she found herself struggling to lift her arms to brush her hair. Opening doors, carrying a purse became extremely difficult as well. The pain was causing anxiety and depression.

Ehlers-Danlos presentation

Ehlers Danlos Syndrome causes frequent dislocations due to loose, rubbery joints and tendons, lack of connective tissue.

Her rheumatologist has her on a daily dose of Cymbalta to help block the pain sensors and she has been working with our staff to obtain further pain relief so she won’t have to increase her dosage or consider a narcotic.

Through twice weekly visits and acupuncture at a combination of strategic points, this patient has found a reduction in muscle spasms, temporary reduction of pain between each session, lasting longer with each treatment, and is beginning to become more active – a key in maintaining health with this illness.

Follow Up: Now 10 months after this initial post, the patient continues to see improvement and has stopped taking 3 of her pain medications entirely. Through regular treatment, exercise, and adjustments to her diet, she has seen great success managing Ehlers Danlos symptoms.
